Dive into the history of Oléron through its monuments and museums
Our 4-star campsite on the Île d’Oléron in Charente-Maritime offers you countless opportunities to explore the island’s history through the centuries. In Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron, visit the Île d’Oléron Museum, a lively presentation of how local people have lived and evolved in their natural environment. You will learn about salt farming, winegrowing, and more. To help visitors better understand and engage with Oléron’s culture, the museum offers guided tours, educational workshops, and an introductory trail for children. Make the most of all the island’s assets during your 4-star camping holiday on the Île d’Oléron.
You can also discover Oléron’s religious heritage by visiting the church of Saint-Georges-d’Oléron, located close to our campsite. Built in 1040, this remarkable building has continued to grow and transform through the centuries. Originally a wooden chapel in the shape of a cross during the 9th century, it was later rebuilt in stone to withstand the assaults of invaders. It still retains from that period its nave and its large doorway. It was subsequently remodelled in the Gothic and Renaissance styles, the latter bringing higher vaults and a raised nave. You will enjoy the church’s surroundings, set between two squares featuring a covered market, bourgeois houses and a public garden shaded by centuries-old trees.
The Saint-Pierre-de-Sales Church in Marennes has a history very similar to that of Saint-Georges. It too has been remodelled several times, and is well worth a visit, if only to admire its impressive 85-metre-high Gothic bell tower.
